A hike on the Wasserklotz promises a great view into the wooded Reichraminger Hintergebirge, to the Haller Mauern and to the summits of the Gesäuse National Park.
For the round trip you should calculate about 4 hours walking time.

The Kalkalpen National Park is the largest protected beech forest area in the Alps and has been Austtria's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2017. During the hike from the Zickerreith alpine pasture hut via the Dörflmoaralm to the Wasserklotz one gains insight into the valuable ecosystem of near-natural beech forests with their plants and animals. The path leads along a forest road to the Dörflmoaralm and then branches off to the right via an alpine pasture to Ahornsattel. From here steep ascent to the summit. Shortly below the summit a short, exposed spot has to be overcome.
Hengstpaßhütte (national park hut) - Zickerreith snack station - path No. 40 forest road via Kreuzau to the Dörlmaralm - turn right onto path No. 475 to the Ahornsattel - turn right (gully) making a steep climb to the summit of the Wasserklotz. Return via the same path or from the Ahornsattel to the left hand via a path across meadows (which later turns into a forest path) bringing you back to path No. 475 - continue back to the valley and the Zickerreith. Time-on-trail ca. 3 hrs.

Die Wanderung startet bei der Almrast Zickerreith am Hengstpaß. Direkt neben dem Almgebäude wandert man auf dem Weg Nr. 40 Forststraße über Kreuzau zur Dörflmoaralm (nicht bewirtschaftet). Hier angekommen, hält man sich rechts und folgt dem Weg Nr. 475 bis zum Ahornsattel. Rechter Hand, nebst einem Gerinne, führt nun ein steil ansteigender Steig zum Gipfel des Wasserklotz. Kurz unterhalb des Gipfelkreuzes gilt es ein kurzes, ausgesetztes Wegstück zu überwinden (Trittsicherheit erforderlich). Der Wasserklotz ist eine Aussichtsloge zum Naturschutzgebiet Haller Mauern, Sengsengebirge, ins Reichraminger Hintergebirge und Blick zu den Berggipfeln im Nationalpark Gesäuse.
Der Abstieg erfolgt entweder am gleichen Weg retour oder lässt sich in einer kleinen Rundwegvariante erweitern über kurz den Grat weiter westlich Richtung Astein wandern und anschließend den Steig abwärts folgen zum Ahornsattel. Hier kann man einem alten Karrenweg weiter folgen, der im Waldstück in einen Steig übergeht. Dieser trifft wieder auf die Forststraße oberhalb der Kreuzau (nicht markiert).
Am Ausgangspunkt angekommen, kann man in der Almrast Zickerreith oder in der benachbarten Spitzenbergeralm einkehren und den Wandertag bei allerlei Almköstlichkeiten ausklingen lassen.
By road
A9 Pyhrn Autobahn to exit Roßleithen/Windischgarsten, continure after 4581 Rosenau am Hengstpaß and follow the the Hengstpaß Landesstraße until shortly before Passhöhe to the parking Zickerreith on the right side of the road.
Or approach via Altenmarkt near St. Gallen to Unterlaussa, follow the Hengstpaß Landesstraße to the Passhöhe. Approx. 200 metres after the Hengstpaßhütte you will find the car park Zickerreith on the left side of the road.
